Already doing the work?
Have it recognised.
Installed solar or battery systems? Completed an earlier version of a unit? You may not need to start again.
Credit Transfer, Recognition of Prior Learning or a Gap Assessment may provide a shorter pathway to a current unit outcome, based on your qualifications, experience plus supporting evidence.
Overview
The right pathway depends on the units you hold, the work you have completed plus the evidence you can provide. Start with the options below or use the pathway finder for a clearer answer.
Pathway 1
Credit Transfer
You already hold the same current unit of competency from another Registered Training Organisation.
Provide a certified copy of your Statement of Attainment or transcript. Once the unit details are verified, no further assessment is usually required.
This fits when:
Your documents show the same current unit code plus title.
Pathway 2
Recognition of Prior Learning
You have the skills but not the current credential.
Recognition of Prior Learning assesses evidence from your real work against the current unit requirements.
Evidence may include project records, site photos, documents, third-party verification plus an assessor interview.
This fits when:
You regularly complete the work and can provide current evidence across the full unit.
Pathway 3
Gap Assessment
You hold a superseded or related unit, or your evidence meets most of the current requirements.
A Gap Assessment focuses on what is missing. You complete the identified gap rather than repeating the full unit.
This fits when:
You trained before the unit was updated, or an assessment identifies a smaller skills or evidence gap.
Find your pathway
Three quick questions. At the end you will have the exact documents to download, the forms to complete and where to send them.
Are you a licensed electrician in Australia?
What formal training do you already hold?
Which area are you seeking recognition in?
Talk to us before you apply
The RPL and Gap Assessment pathways on this page are designed for licensed Australian electricians working on electrical installations. If you are unlicensed, an apprentice, or hold an overseas licence, there are still options, and the right one depends on your situation.
The full course is your best route
Without prior units or workplace evidence to assess, a recognition pathway will not save you time or money. RPL and a Gap Assessment cost the same as the training. Enrolling in the course gives you the skills and the units together.
Credit Transfer
Because you hold the identical current unit(s), you can apply for direct credit. No assessment kit is needed. New Energy Training verifies your documents with the issuing RTO or the USI registry before credit is granted.
Credit transfer applies only where the exact current unit has been achieved and verified. If your units are superseded, we will guide you to the Gap Assessment pathway instead.
Recognition is never automatic. Every application is assessed against the current unit requirements, and outcomes depend on your evidence. The cost is the same as undertaking the training, payment is required at submission, and if unsuccessful these funds can be attributed to the training.
New Energy Training RPL and Gap Assessment process
Before you commence on this journey, please ensure you ask Netty any questions you may have.
RPL/Gap Assessment Candidates
To help keep your assessment moving smoothly, we ask all students to confirm they understand how the process works.
- Your assessment timeline depends on your submissions. Assessment can only progress when you provide the required documents and evidence. If something is missing, the timeline pauses until it's received.
- Trainers can only start once everything is ready. Your trainer can't begin reviewing your evidence until all required documents are submitted and complete.
- Submitting evidence doesn't guarantee an immediate result. Because of how the course is structured, you may still need to complete current units or provide additional evidence before an outcome can be made.
- Assessment is a shared process. We work with you throughout the assessment. If evidence isn't provided, the process simply stops until you're ready to continue.
Candidate reviews all the information available on the website – based on the Unit of Competency (Gap Assessment) or full qualification (RPL) they are seeking.
Candidate determines if they wish to proceed with a Gap Assessment or an RPL.
Please note it is the same cost to undertake a Gap Assessment, RPL or undertake training.
Candidate determines to proceed with a Gap Assessment or an RPL.
Candidate determines they will undertake the course of study for the Gap Assessment or RPL.
Candidate downloads and completes the appropriate RPL or Gap Assessment Kit.
Candidate completed the appropriate RPL or Gap Assessment Kit, Application form and collects Evidence required.
Once all forms are completed the candidate uploads their submission.
Upon submission a NET Trainer/Assessor will review your submission.
Following the review of your submission you will be advised if your submission meets the criteria.
Candidate enrols and completes their course.
If your submission does not meet the criteria this will be explained and you will be invited to undertake the course of study.
If your submission meets the criteria, you will be invited to an interview to progress your application.
Qualification or Statement of Attainment issued.
Following your interview the Gap Assessment or RPL outcome is determined.
If gaps are identified based on Application and Interview Candidate is then invited to enrol in required training.
If deemed suitable for Gap Assessment or RPL.

What your evidence needs to show
Assessors judge every piece of evidence against four rules. Meeting them from the start helps your application move smoothly.
Valid
Directly related to the requirements of the unit you are applying for.
Sufficient
Enough to cover the required skills, knowledge and workplace performance, including any mandatory number of occasions.
Authentic
Confirmed as your own work, with your personal contribution clearly identified.
Current
Aligned with current industry practice, standards, manufacturer requirements and regulations.
What counts as evidence?
Each unit has a range of expected evidence. This may include:
- Previous training
- Licences
- Qualifications
- Project records
- Workplace documents
- Photographs
- Testing records
- Commissioning reports
- Supervisor verification
- Other relevant industry evidence
Keep in mind: holding a superseded unit does not guarantee RPL. Every application is assessed against the current unit requirements.
Training hours compared with recognition hours
Nominal hours are a guide to the time generally required to deliver plus assess a unit of competency.
Recognition of Prior Learning or a Gap Assessment may reduce that time when your existing evidence meets the current requirements.

Candidate How To Kit
Start here. It explains the RPL and Gap Assessment process end to end and includes the self-assessment rating guide.
RPL / Gap Assessment Application Form
Every RPL and Gap Assessment candidate completes this. It covers your details, employment, prior training and referees.
RPL Assessment Kits
The assessment tasks for your units. Available per individual unit, as clustered kits (Grid Connection Solar, Grid Connection Battery, Installation) or as the combined kit covering the full suite.
Gap Assessment Kits
One kit per unit for candidates holding superseded or related units. Each kit maps your prior training and evidence against the current requirements, so you only complete the gaps.
Third-Party Verification Report
Completed by your supervisor or employer to verify your workplace evidence. Required for RPL applications.
Credit Transfer Application Form
For candidates holding the identical current unit(s) from another Registered Training Organisation. Includes the consent form authorising New Energy Training to verify your documents.
