Solar and Battery Sales Professional

Every industry benefits from people who improve their skills and knowledge. None more so than the domestic Renewable Energy industry, which is experiencing unprecedented demand for solar PV and battery storage systems from customers looking to reduce their soaring energy costs. Your customers need to be sold a solution that works best for them and their individual circumstances, not just one that costs the most money.

If you are involved in the selling of these systems, or consulting on them, how do you ensure you are providing the correct information and recommendations to your customers?

This course focuses on developing industry professionals, not just salespeople. It aims to provide you with fundamental technical knowledge and guidance on ethical practices, customer-centric approaches, and compliance with Australian regulations.

This course is eligible for 20 CPD points with the Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).

1. Understand the customer’s requirements
Listen to the customer to understand what they are trying to achieve and provide advice on potential solutions that are aligned with their goals (e.g. VPP, behind-the-meter or wholesale market solution).

2. Conduct professional customer consultations and site assessments
Demonstrate industry professionalism by building successful customer relationships and conducting holistic site surveys that include assessing customer energy consumption patterns, seasonal variations, site-specific conditions and future energy needs to provide tailored solar and battery solutions rather than focusing on a sales ‘quick win’.

3. Analyse and interpret energy consumption data
Read and accurately interpret electricity bills, smart meter data and consumption information to identify the customer’s energy usage patterns. Calculate appropriate system sizing and match the customer’s needs to solar and battery system solutions.

4. Provide accurate technical and financial information
Communicate realistic system performance expectations by understanding system losses, seasonal solar resource variations, product warranties and maintenance requirements. Calculate and explain key financial metrics and payback periods in compliance with Australian consumer protection regulations. Include accurate information on the Solar Battery Rebate Scheme and other relevant state and federal government incentives, with a particular focus on the Home Battery Rebate Scheme including the Written Statement requirements.

5. Recommend appropriate solar and battery system configurations
Evaluate and propose suitable system options based on customer preferences, including behind-the-meter systems, wholesale electricity market participation or Virtual Power Plant (VPP) arrangements. Effectively use solar quotation software, such as Pylon or OpenSolar. Consider Australian standards, Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP) requirements, Clean Energy Council (CEC) guidelines and manufacturer installation specifications for compliant installations. Understand the role of a Certified Designer, who is responsible for signing-off on the solution.

6. Deliver exceptional customer service throughout the sales journey
Maintain professional communication and ethical sales practices by setting realistic expectations, providing honest product comparisons, coordinating with installation teams, establishing system monitoring and maintenance programs and conducting post-installation follow-ups. Keep the customer informed about timelines for the sales process and installation. Build long-term customer relationships that enhance industry reputation and generate future sales and referrals.

These learning outcomes align with the course's emphasis on developing industry professionals rather than just salespeople, focusing on technical knowledge, ethical practices, customer-centric approaches, and compliance with Australian regulations.
